G200 - Advanced Piano Tuning and Grand Piano Technology

DESCRIPTION

 

This course refines and adds to the student's basic tuning knowledge and skills and introduces the grand piano with its special design & differences from the vertical piano. 

 

Special repair and grand regulation techniques are taught.  This course is necessary to properly service and rebuild the grand piano.  The student will demonstrate the skills and knowledge acquired through attendance and interaction during classroom lectures & labs, the completion of individual lab projects and the rebuilding of his/her grand project piano.

Introduction

·          Grand piano terminology

·          Grand piano design

·          Development of the grand action and the "grand" piano

 

Tuning

·          Advanced theory

·          Refinements to equal temperament

·          Analyzing the stretch factor for each piano

·          Perfecting tuning hammer technique, pin & string setting

·          Special techniques for tuning the grand piano

·          Voicing the hammers

·          Other tuning temperaments

·          Special tuning topics and considerations

 

Technical

·          Design & nomenclature of the grand piano

·          Discovering the differences in the grand & the vertical actions

·          Special repairs relating to grands

·          Regulating the keys & action of the grand piano

·          Regulating the pedals & pedal trapwork

·          Rebuilding the grand project piano

Other

·          Ordering parts & supplies

·          Developing business contacts

·          Developing industry contacts

·          Bidding for contract work

·          Further training & continuing PianoTech education    

 

Hours Needed to Complete this Course

 

·          This Course:  Lecture hours   175 *

·          Additional Project hours   400 **

 

*   (Theory, Lecture & Instructional Lab project hours are performed at the school and in the

     school's shop.) 

** (Additional hours will be needed for home reading assignments, practice tuning and work on the project piano.  This time varies with each student.)

 

Tuition for this Course

 

$ 4,000    (Financing can be arranged.)

(Notes:)

·          Additional tools, books & supplies may be purchased at a student discount.

·          When the project piano belongs to the student, the student must pay for replacement parts and supplies, which can be purchased at the student discount.

 

General

 

     A Diploma will be presented to each student who successfully completes this course.
