C300 - Concert Piano Tuning and Preparation of the Performance Piano

DESCRIPTION

 

This course focuses on teaching the advanced student the special methods and procedures needed to prepare the grand piano for a concert performance.

 

The student will learn high-level grand regulation, special "tricks" for preparing the piano within certain time restraints, hammer voicing for temporary effects, and working with the pianist to achieve desired results.

 

Techniques will be taught for performing "super tunings" which will be stable throughout the concert.

 

CURRICULUM

 

Introduction

·          The concert situation

·          The piano artist's needs and desires

·          The concert hall manager's desires and limitations

·          The piano's condition

·          Time restraints

·          Financial restraints

·          The constant problem: What the piano needs vs. what you are allowed to do

·          Working with the concert hall manager

·          Working with the piano artist

 

Tuning

·          Pin & string setting as the concert tuners do it

·          Special tuning tests

·          Methods for decreasing total tuning time

·          Tuning at other than A440?  Do we or do we not?

·          Advanced voicing techniques

Technical

·          Preparing the concert piano for regulation

·          Regulating the concert piano with adequate time available

·          Regulating the concert piano under time restraints

·          Giving the piano "ESP" (Evenness, Speed, Power)

 

Other

·          Interrelation of the tuning and technical aspects of piano preparation

·          "Tuning" into the concert hall manager...public relations!

·          "Tuning" into the artist's desires & expectations---diplomacy!

 

Hours Needed to Complete this Course

·          This Course:  Lecture hours   84 *

·          Additional Project hours   192 **

 

*   (Theory, Lecture & Instructional Lab project hours are performed at the school and in the

     school's shop.) 

** (Additional hours will be needed for home reading assignments, practice tuning and work on the project piano.  This time varies with each student.)

 

Tuition for this Course

$ 2,000       (Financing can be arranged.)

(Notes:)

·          Additional tools, books & supplies may be purchased at a student discount.

·          When the project piano belongs to the student, the student must pay for replacement parts and supplies, which can be purchased at the student discount.

 

General

 

     A Diploma will be presented to each student who successfully completes this course.
